The band immediately caught the eye of legendary promoter Bill Graham, who immediately began recording. The album was released in 1970 on Graham's own label, San Francisco Records, but despite an expensive promotional campaign and good press, it failed to achieve commercial success. Graham was so confident of its success that, without waiting for the album's release, he set the musicians to work on a follow-up album, which was recorded but never released.
