Kahvas Jute formed in Sydney in June 1970. Their debut album Wide Open was released in January 1971. Wide Open is a masterpiece of progressive rock and a great example of underground psychedelic hard rock at its most inventive and powerful. As the album title suggests, Wide Open is a free-flowing, expansive mix of rock, blues and jazz with a dash of acid folk. The album sounds very much like English bands, but the music is by no means a pure copy of overseas bands, it is imbued with an Australian feel. Clearly structured songs and great guitar solos by Dennis Wilson and Tim Gaze make the album a real treasure, where style, content, technique and sound design work in perfect harmony. Moreover, all the themes are held together by the infinitely varied bass lines of the great Bob Daisley, who later made an international career with Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep, Chicken 'Shack - the list goes on and on. And of course, let's add here the hard but lively drums of Dannie Davidson
