Samanhta Brown (born October 7, 1964) is an English singer and songwriter. Her parents, Joe Brown and Vicki Brown, were already well-known figures in the British music scene by the time their daughter was born, so it was perhaps inevitable that Samanhta would follow in their footsteps. Her first studio recording, which earned her her first payday, was her vocals on the Small Faces album In The Shade, when she was just twelve years old. By the time she was almost out of her teens, Sam had already become a fully formed musician, with extensive experience playing keyboards and performing backing vocals. She toured and recorded with artists such as Gary Moore, George Harrison, Small Faces, Spandau Ballet, Adam Ant, Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, Nick Cave, Sade, and Barclay James Harvest. At the same time, she developed her songwriting skills, which eventually led to a contract with A&M Records in 1986. This culminated in the worldwide hit "Stop," a bluesy ballad that showcased Sam's impressive vocal power and reached the top of the charts in 10 countries. The album from which it spawned has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still in print. The next three years were a whirlwind of worldwide promotional tours, with the recording of Sam's second album, April Moon, occurring somewhere in between. Perhaps inevitably, the album didn't achieve the same success as its predecessor, although sales still reached a million copies. By the early 1990s, Sam had freed herself from the rosy vision of certain aspects of show business. This was largely due to the death of her mother, who had a profound influence on her life. This tragedy became the starting point for the concept album 43 Minutes. This touching and powerful work proved too uncommercial for A&M Records, who wanted several potential hits recorded and added to the track list. Brown, unwilling to compromise, and after a protracted legal battle, purchased the album's master recordings and released them in 1992 on her own label, Pod Music, a year after her mother's death. The singer's collaboration with A&M Records was terminated.
This release is a comprehensive 4CD+DVD box set, created in collaboration with Sam Brown herself. The five-disc set includes the albums The Stop! and April Moon with bonus tracks, including mixes/edits of the singles, the previously unreleased track "This Feeling," and a remix of "Your Love Is All." All the B-sides and non-album tracks released on each single at the time, 14 previously unreleased original demos, including two unreleased songs, "Wasted Away" and "I Cried," and a 24-page booklet with track-by-track liner notes for both albums, featuring interviews with Sam Brown
